The sixpence was introduced to English circulation in 1551 during the reign of Edward VI. It became an immensely popular coin, and it is linked to various traditions and customs. The 1967 coin hosts the late queen Elizabeth II. February 2021 marked 50 years since Britain’s currency became decimal - introducing the coins and metrics we use today. Known as ‘D-Day’, for Decimal Day, the change affected the entire nation, bringing people together as they learnt to master a new currency.
